The properm is a device for obtaining small scale, localized, non destructive and rapid measurements of permeability of rock sample using the steady state method. The apparatus is mainly composed of a pressure and flow module, a core frame module and an injection probe module. The probe tip is positioned at the location of the rock to perform the permeability measurement and then pressed against the surface of the permeable sample. Gas is forced to flow under constant pressure through an injection tip pressed against the surface of a permeable sample. The flow rate is measured by a mass flow controller while the pore pressure by an accurate electronic pressure transducer. The instrument is provided with a data acquisition and calculation computer station. Permeability measurements can be made using the modified Darcy’s law which includes a geometric factor to describe the complexities of flow around the tip seal for a given sample geometry.

  • The method is none destructive in the sense that there is no need to cut core plugs. It is rapid and low cost.
  • The probe investigates only a small volume of rock. The measurement is well suited for investigation of spatial permeability variation in cores containing thin laminations and small scale heterogeneity.
