NER’s TinyPerm III Portable Permeameter is a portable handheld air permeameter used for measurement of rock matrix permeability or effective fracture apertures on outcrops and at the core scale.

The operator presses a rubber nozzle against the specimen and withdraws air from it with a single stroke of a syringe. As air is pulled from the sample, a microcontroller unit simultaneously monitors the syringe volume and the transient vacuum pulse created at the sample surface.

Measurements are automatically stored and cataloged on the NER-supplied Android™ device, communicating wirelessly with the TinyPerm portable permeameter. The Android device shows a plot of the time-domain pressure and volume data in real time as a measurement is taking place. New capabilities in TinyPerm allow faster measurement times at low permeabilities.

The measurement data, along with GPS-derived latitude and longitude coordinates, serial number of the TinyPerm permeameter, date, barometric pressure, ambient temperature and humidity, and sample images, are captured in data files that are easily exported from the Android device to desktop computers for additional analyses.

For intact rock, the permeability measurement range is from 1 millidarcy to 10 darcys. Similarly, fracture apertures from approximately 10 microns to 2 millimeters can be determined.

The TinyPerm III Permeameter system, which includes the permeameter, Android device and software, spare nozzle, and operator’s manual, comes in a rugged case for transportation and shipping.

NER Autoscan System

The AutoScan scanner is a unique measurement platform developed by NER for the detailed quantitative and efficient description of core properties. NER developed this non-destructive measurement system specifically for rock typing, plug selection, and well-log data calibration in order to optimize the use of core for reservoir characterization. A detailed description of core properties and their correlations is made possible via the use of interchangeable probes for ultrasonic velocity (compressional and shear), complex electrical impedance, hardness testing, gas permeability, composition (FTIR), and digital photography. Formation heterogeneity for each of these properties can be measured in a single setup on up to 4 meters (12 feet) of core using point measurements and surface scans. A high-precision computer-controlled XY gantry guided by a laser ranging device positions each probe at programmed locations and sample measurement intervals as small as 0.5 millimeter (.02 inches).

The computer-controlled Nanoperm instrument is specifically designed to precisely measure the ultra-low permeability (to Nitrogen) of very tight plug-sized rock samples from unconventional reservoirs, such as tight gas sandstones and gas shales. Permeability measurements are made using the steady state Darcy’s method at user-selectable confining pressures (from 400 psi to 10,000 psi). The instrument is designed for the injection of gas through cores at various pore pressures. The unit is also capable of measuring gas flow rates though the core as low as 10-6 cm3/sec to an accuracy of a few percent and can measure steady state gas permeability with a resolution of +/-0.1nD.r:



Probe Permeameter

The properm is a device for obtaining small scale, localized, non destructive and rapid measurements of permeability of rock sample using the steady state method. The apparatus is mainly composed of a pressure and flow module, a core frame module and an injection probe module. The probe tip is positioned at the location of the rock to perform the permeability measurement and then pressed against the surface of the permeable sample. Gas is forced to flow under constant pressure through an injection tip pressed against the surface of a permeable sample. The flow rate is measured by a mass flow controller while the pore pressure by an accurate electronic pressure transducer. The instrument is provided with a data acquisition and calculation computer station. Permeability measurements can be made using the modified Darcy’s law which includes a geometric factor to describe the complexities of flow around the tip seal for a given sample geometry.

Calibrated Permeability Check Plugs

The check plugs are used to check and test the calibration of gas permeameters. They are made of a shell that protects the porous media. These calibration plugs are not primary standards and have been tested using customary testing methods.
