NER’s TinyPerm III Portable Permeameter is a portable handheld air permeameter used for measurement of rock matrix permeability or effective fracture apertures on outcrops and at the core scale.

The operator presses a rubber nozzle against the specimen and withdraws air from it with a single stroke of a syringe. As air is pulled from the sample, a microcontroller unit simultaneously monitors the syringe volume and the transient vacuum pulse created at the sample surface.

Measurements are automatically stored and cataloged on the NER-supplied Android™ device, communicating wirelessly with the TinyPerm portable permeameter. The Android device shows a plot of the time-domain pressure and volume data in real time as a measurement is taking place. New capabilities in TinyPerm allow faster measurement times at low permeabilities.

The measurement data, along with GPS-derived latitude and longitude coordinates, serial number of the TinyPerm permeameter, date, barometric pressure, ambient temperature and humidity, and sample images, are captured in data files that are easily exported from the Android device to desktop computers for additional analyses.

For intact rock, the permeability measurement range is from 1 millidarcy to 10 darcys. Similarly, fracture apertures from approximately 10 microns to 2 millimeters can be determined.

The TinyPerm III Permeameter system, which includes the permeameter, Android device and software, spare nozzle, and operator’s manual, comes in a rugged case for transportation and shipping.

Steady State Gas Permeamter (Educational)

The educational gasperm instrument is dedicated to measure permeability to gas (air, nitrogen,..) of plug sized core samples at room conditions and reservoir overburden pressure using the steady state method. Relative Permeameter (Educational)

The BRP 30 is a semi-automated relative permeameter specifically designed for educational purposes. It allows for measuring single and two-phase liquid relative permeability as well as gas/liquid relative permeability on plug sized core samples in unsteady state conditions. The test consists of direct measurement of L/L and L/G permeability while injecting oil, water or gas through the rock sample. The system includes injection pump, fluid cylinder, nitrogen gas line, hassler core holder, instrumentation, gas meter and computer station.



Electrical Properties System at Ambient Conditiions

Complete system used for the determination of resistivity and formation factor of plug sized sample at ambient conditions. The system permits to measure the rock resistivity Ro and the brine resistivity Rw at different frequencies. The cell utilises a two and four electrode design. The platens contact the core end faces under a constant pneumatic pressure up to 6 bar. This minimises contact resistance artefacts which are often found where a screw or jack mechanism is used to load the sample onto the electrode platens. The cell is provided with a plastic cover box to minimise core saturation changes. The instrument also includes a dip conductivity probe and a becher to measure the brine resistivity. An LCR meter is used to monitor the core and brine resistance and capacitance.



Liquid Permeameter (Educational)

The Liquid permeameter is dedicated to measure permeability to liquid of plug sized core samples at room conditions. The liquid permeability determination is based on the Darcy's law and assumes that one phase is present in the core and there is no rock fluid interaction. The instrument is provided with an hassler coreholder, a fluid transfer vessel, a console with pressure digital display, 3 interchangeable burettes for various permeability ranges, an electronic timer for flow rate calculation and an Excel spread sheet calculation template. This low cost apparatus is particular interested for educational purposes.



Unsteady State Gas Permeameter & Porosimeter (Educational)

The Coreval 30 instrument is dedicated to measure the porosity and permeability to helium/nitrogen of plug sized core samples at a fixed confining pressure of 400 psi maximum . The instrument is provided with a data acquisition and calculation computer station. Permeability measurements are made using the unsteady state pressure drop method. This data is used to determine the equivalent liquid permeability, slip and turbulence factors. Equivalent air permeability at a user specified pressure is also computed. Porosity and pore volume measurements are made using the Boyle’s and Charles’ law technique.

Capillary Pressure Cell (Educational)

The educational capillary pressure cell enables to desaturate one core sample by the porous plate method. Data obtained can be used to calculate capillary pressure versus saturation curves. A high precision weighing balance can be used for core saturation measurement. The desaturation cell is manufactured from stainless steel and at its base is equipped with a ceramic plate used as a semi permeable porous plate. The set up consists of a capillary pressure cell, with an easy opening lid, o'rings seals, outflow tube assemblies and pressure control panel. One ceramic plate is provided with the system withstanding 10 bar pressure. The control panel includes a digital pressure display , two low and high range pressure regulators and a set of control valves.



Dean Stark Extractor

The dean stark extractor is used to determine fluid saturation of core samples. The sample is first weighed and then introduced in the dean stark extractor. The water fraction is vaporized by boiling solvent, condensed and then collected in a calibrated receiver. Vaporized solvent also condenses, soaks the sample, and extracts the oil. The sample is then oven dried and weighed. The oil content is determined by gravimetric difference while the water content is volumetrically measured by the receiving tube. The apparatus consists of a distillation/extraction glassware unit and a heating mantle with thermostatic controller. The glassware is composed of boiling flask with extractor, a sample support screen, volumetrically graduated water receiving tube, condenser and desiccant drying tube. A flexible plastic tubing is also used to connect the condenser to the water cooling unit. All these devices are mounted on a mounting rack.

The Helium gas expansion porosimeter is based on the Boyle's and Charles' law expansion of helium gas and is used for direct grain volume and pore volume measurement in auxiliary cell at isothermal conditions.
