Vacuum Embedding Unit

The vacuum embedding unit has been developed for impregnating porous and fragile specimens with a suitable bonding material that fills pores, cracks and prevents specimens from fracturing. Up to 10 specimens can be impregnated in a row without breaking the vacuum. The specimens are placed onto a turntable plate in individual moulds inside the vacuum chamber. A noiseless electrical vacuum pump, a pressure gauge and a vacuum regulating valve are used to control the vacuum inside the chamber. Having evacuated the specimen chamber, moulds are brought successively under the resin’s feeding nozzle and filled up by the impregnated resin. A resin dispenser is used to fill up the resin into the moulds. It is composed of a disposable plastic cup containing the resin, a disposable plastic tube for applying resin, a rubber stopper ensuring effective sealing and a ball joint allowing the tube to be manipulated and orientated inside the chamber. A lamp helps to follow the extraction of bubbles rising from the resin. The chamber is also made from glass which means that any drips or spilled resin will not stick, making cleaning and maintenance easier.



Semi-Automated Polishing Machine

The LGP 250-P is a single station machine specifically designed for small scale polishing operations. The robust, simple to use system provides high quality polished thin sections with the minimum of capital investment. With variable speed from 50-600 rpm, it is possible to carry out polishing processes, including final polishing with oxide polishing suspensions. The LGP 250-P allows for polishing with polishing cloths or magnetic polishing disc. A polishing head with four holders for the production of polished thin sections and polished specimens of mineralogical materials is supplied. This special polishing head allows for polishing simultaneously up to 4 thin sections with an excellent quality. The force is applied to the thin section through weights which can be individually adjusted up to maximum weight of 200 grams. Height specimen holders are supplied to suit four 30x45mm slides and four 60 x 45 mm slides as standard, but various sizes can be accommodated if required.



Manual Lapping, Grinding, and Polishing Machine

It is an ideal tool for teaching and student use in laboratories, with a low volume production requirement for polished thin section rock samples. The robust, simple to use system provides high quality polished thin sections with the minimum of capital investment. With variable speed from 50-600 rpm, it is possible to carry out manual grinding, lapping and polishing processes, including final polishing with oxide polishing suspensions. The LGP 250 allows for lapping on cast iron discs with SiC lapping powder, grinding with magnetic diamond grinding disc available in different grades and polishing with polishing cloths or magnetic polishing disc.



Slicing, Grinding, and Lapping Machine

The SGL200 model allows for slicing, grinding and lapping specimens using only one instrument. It features a lapping disc, a diamond cutting blade, a diamond grinding wheel and a vacuum chuck that accepts several sizes of glass sizes. It holds the thin section during slicing and grinding operation. A hand wheel allows for transferring the specimen from the cutting blade to the grinding wheel without having to remove the specimen after slicing from the chuck. An adjustable screw controls slicing thickness while a precision micrometer controls grinding thickness of thin section. The lapping operation is performed on a steel disc with SiC lapping powder in manual mode.

Bonding Jigs

The bonding jig is designed to provide a uniform thickness of bonding material between specimens and glass sides. Bond the rock sample on its glass slide is a very important step in the thin section preparation. The success of grinding, lapping and polishing steps depends of the quality of bonding. The objective is to obtain very thin layers of glue. First, a thin layer of epoxy resin is applied on both the glass slide and the specimen. The glass slide is then manually stuck on the sample. To improve the bonding, the complete assembly is placed on the heating bonding press which allows to bond specimen and glass slide under pressure and temperature: The specimen is pressed on its glass slide thanks to an individual weight whereas the temperature is controlled from 20°C to 130°C +/- 2°C to ensure perfect bonding.
