The RHEO 1000 is a computer-controlled rotational rheometer operating on the Taylor-Couette flow principle; that is a viscous fluid confined in the gap between two concentric cylinders. The apparatus is specifically designed to measure the rheological properties of a live oil sample over a wide range of pressures, temperatures, chemical compositions and shear rates. Organic solid deposition can be initiated under production-representative shear conditions while simultaneously measuring the sample’s rheological properties. Essential information on petroleum fluids containing dissolved paraffins or asphaltenes can be revealed by virtue of this device. Their precipitation induces a transition from Newtonian to non-Newtonian behaviour, i.e. the fluid’s viscosity, initially constant, becomes stress dependent. The impact on production can be immense, thereby justifying the purpose of conducting research on the rheological properties of these hydrocarbons under representative pressure, temperature and shear rate conditions. The RHEO1000 is the perfect tool to accomplish this task.
