- Society of Core Analysts (SCA): SCA is a professional non-profit scientific organization whose membership is open to all geoscience professionals interested in the study and characterization of reservoir rocks and interstitial fluids. The SCA holds workshops, presentations, and an annual symposium (typically in August or September of each year) where members from around the world meet to present their work and discuss with peers. The SCA is a Chapter-at-Large of The Society of Petrophysicists and Well Log Analysts (SPWLA).
- Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE): Founded in 1957, SPE has grown its global membership to almost 150,000, including more than 50,000 students. The organization’s mission is: To collect, disseminate, and exchange technical knowledge concerning the exploration, development and production of oil and gas resources, and related technologies for the public benefit; and to provide opportunities for professionals to enhance their technical and professional competence. SPE’s Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition is the Society’s flagship event and offers numerous technical sessions and training courses for professionals of every level.
Industry Knowledge Base:
- Petrowiki: This website was developed by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) as a vehicle for knowledge capture and sharing for its members. The initial content for PetroWiki was SPE’s seven-volume Petroleum Engineering Handbook (PEH), published in 2006-2007. SPE recognized that this valuable industry resource could be even better with updates for the latest technology and expansion of topics that were abbreviated by the page limitations associated with print. Petrowiki also offers an SPE E&P Glossary for all visitors to the site.
- Schlumberger Oilfield Glossary: Described by Schlumberger as “Where the Oil Field Meets the Dictionary”, this website offers definitions for major oil field activities and terms, making it a useful resource for both the technical generalist and the expert.

Seal Materials Compatibility:
We are often asked about compatibility of oilfield and laboratory chemicals with various sealing materials. From many years’ experience, we have a good general sense for chemical compatibility, it is nearly impossible to know all the combinations that customers might encounter in their labs. As such, we often look to online sources and have found the following to be useful references.
Freight and Shipping Terms:
Incoterms®, is an abbreviation for International Commercial Terms. They are a set of rules which define the responsibilities of sellers and buyers for the delivery of goods under sales contracts for domestic and international trade. See the links at this US government website for a detailed chart and definitions of Seller and Buyer responsibilities throughout the process of shipping and receiving goods.
