I run a synchrotron X-ray beamline for microtomography studies at the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory. As a national user facility, we host researchers from across the country who come for just 2–3 days of beam time, so reliability and ease of use are essential. Many of our studies examine geological materials in triaxial cells at conditions simulating Earth’s shallow crust — temperatures up to 300 °C, confining pressures of 30–50 MPa, and axial loads up to 600 MPa.

The Vindum VP-12 pump we use to drive pore fluids through samples has been extremely reliable, with essentially no problems. Because the Vindum pumps use Modbus, integrating them into our EPICS distributed control system was straightforward, giving us user-friendly displays, logging, and scripted operation. Vindum’s engineers have also been very responsive to our suggestions for new Modbus interface features. By contrast, pumps from a large competitor on the same system suffered from an unreliable Ethernet Modbus interface, and their technical support was unable to resolve the issue. We later added Vindum CV automated valves to replace the manual valves on those competitor pumps — they work great and let us refill remotely without entering the X-ray station.

Vindum technical support has been outstanding, always responding quickly with excellent advice. Based on that experience, when I began building a second tomography system at another beamline, I decided to use only Vindum pumps — two VIPR pumps for axial and confining pressure and a VP-12 for fluid flow. That station also houses a 250-ton hydraulic press. When the very large syringe pump driving that press failed just days before a hands-on workshop with 10 arriving students, I realized the VIPR had the pressure range and fluid capacity to drive the main ram. In a single day, we swapped in the VIPR — and it has outperformed the original pump so well that we plan to use it from now on.

We have been using Vindum pumps since 2015 across a range of Australian Research Council and industry-funded research projects. Our primary use has been in core flooding studies to investigate the flow properties of coal cores for coal seam gas developments in Queensland, as well as more recently for hydrogen injection experiments in sandstone to assess the feasibility of underground hydrogen storage. In addition, Vindum pumps have been integral to our X-ray computed microtomography studies, enabling precise flow control to investigate flow processes involving immiscible fluids in porous rocks. These experiments have been conducted at both the Australian Synchrotron, Melbourne, Australia (Dr. Samuel Jackson at CSIRO https://people.csiro.au/J/S/samuel-jackson ) and the Tyree X-ray facility at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. The pumps transported reliably from New South Wales to Victoria (across states) and performed well, providing precise control of fluid injection into mini-core plugs (typically 5 mm in diameter and 10 mm in length). Overall, Vindum pumps have been a critical component of our experimental workflows, offering robustness, accuracy, and flexibility across a wide range of advanced subsurface and imaging applications.

In the field of catalyst and materials research, and particularly regarding high‑throughput research, precise and versatile dosing of a wide range of liquids and liquefied gases is essential. The VP pump meets these requirements thanks to its broad range of modifications – from a high‑temperature version to a corrosion‑resistant variant made of Hastelloy. At the same time, the pump can be integrated into process automation, allowing it to be used in unattended 24/7 plant operation.

We had high expectations of the VP pump, and the pump has delivered. It is used in a wide variety of our systems and is therefore subjected to rigorous and demanding operation. In such conditions, it is inevitable that occasional challenges may arise. These challenges have been, and will continue to be, resolved jointly with Vindum. Close collaboration and strong technical support have been key enablers. The fast and precise technical guidance provided by Vindum, together with the high level of technical expertise of the hte service technicians, enables straightforward solutions to be found within a very short time – in Heidelberg as well as at our customers’ sites worldwide.

We have been using the VP pump since 2020 and have since equipped many of our research facilities with various versions of this pump. Regarding high‑temperature applications, corrosive media, and liquefied gases, the pump has made a very positive impression thanks to its precise dosing performance.

The VP pump represents a solution for a wide range of applications. In particular, its different variants allow a broad spectrum of requirements within materials and catalysis research to be addressed.

Since 2020 hte GmbH has equipped a wide variety of our systems with the Vindum VP pumps. Precise dosing is critical for catalyst and materials research. However, what stands out is the wide range of applications—from low-viscosity to high-viscosity liquids, from non-corrosive to corrosive substances, and from liquids to liquefied gases.
